| Today’s item is simple, but easily one of the most used pieces of equipment on our ambulances — the glucometer! This small device measures a patient’s blood sugar level. To use it, we start by cleaning the patient’s finger with an alcohol wipe. We then use a tiny needle (called a lancet) that retracts after use to obtain a small drop of blood. A test strip is placed into the glucometer, and the drop of blood is applied to the strip. Within seconds, the glucometer displays the patient’s blood sugar! This tool is incredibly important. While it obviously helps us discover and treat diabetic emergencies, it also helps us identify other medical concerns. Sometimes patients with underlying health issues—such as infections or sepsis—will have abnormal blood sugar levels. This little device gives us fast, reliable information that helps us understand what’s going on with our patients and how we can help them feel better! |
